Leave requests follow an approval chain:

Single-Step Approval:

  • Most common: Direct manager approves
  • Request goes to your assigned manager
  • Manager approves or denies

Multi-Step Approval:

  • Some companies use multi-step chains
  • Example: Team Lead → Department Manager → HR
  • Each step must approve before moving to next

Approval Routing:

  1. Direct Manager: Your manager_id is checked first
  2. Team Manager: If no direct manager, team manager is used
  3. Admin Fallback: If no manager, admin receives request

What Happens:

  • Request appears in each approver's queue
  • Once approved, it moves to next step (if applicable)
  • If any step denies, request is denied
  • Requester is notified at each step

Cancellation Approval:

  • Cancelling approved leave requires approval
  • Goes through the same approval chain
  • Once approved, leave is cancelled and balance restored
